The recently enacted economic stimulus package lets first time homebuyers claim a refundable $8,000 federal tax credit on their new home purchase. The $8,000 federal tax credit is for first time homebuyers who close between January 1st and December 1st, 2009. They will receive a tax credit of up to $8000. The credit does NOT have to be repaid, but buyers have to stay in their home for at least three years. This new credit is for individuals with incomes under $75,000 or for married couples with incomes under $150,000 who file their taxes jointly.
